ICU Expansion

Overview

Pointcore supported OSF HealthCare Saint Mary Medical Center in a phased ICU expansion to meet increasing demand for both critical care and respiratory support. In phase one, respiratory support spaces were built, including a medication room, vent storage, a break room and office areas, so the hospital could respond immediately to rising respiratory needs. In phase two, we expanded the ICU from six to nine patient rooms, adding anterooms, patient toilets, a nurse station, equipment storage, a monitor room and staff offices.

To accommodate new systems, we replaced the air handling unit (AHU) with a modular 8,000 CFM Trane unit and upgraded ductwork, chilled water piping, humidifiers and exhaust systems. We also secured a temporary Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) occupancy certificate for the respiratory spaces so patient care could begin without delay. Throughout the project, we managed design coordination, scheduling, risk and cost, all while minimizing disruption to hospital operations.
